It's was his eyes, she decided. Those eyes that shift color between green and hazel in the tiniest change in light. Eyes, which have a nature as capricious and mischievous as their owner. Yes, she thought to herself, they were her undoing.

She had considered herself too practical, too responsible, too burdened by responsibility to be drawn into these fantasies. But here she was, turning her glance away from his, lest she betray her emotions. A deep breath pulls in the smell she has come to associate with him. A smell that is both a comfort and a nuisance. He is her rock when the demands of the people that rely on her are too strong. She knows that she can count on him to lend an ear, or even a shoulder to cry on should she ever let her tight control slip enough to show such human emotions.

In her mind’s eye she can see him carrying out his duties, being a hardened soldier, yet carrying an almost indefinable grace of soul and warmth that allows him to win the loyalty of so many. He is a soldier but he isn’t ice. Oh no, this man is all fire and heat. He is rash in his actions and feels so deep that sometimes she wonders why he chose this occupation. She can see the many faces he has, relaxed, tense, worried. All of them appeal to her. She doesn’t fool herself, she sees the recklessness and mischief in him as well, but that only adds the lure of danger.

She glanced over at him to see a small smirk on his lips and wondered what he was thinking. Come to think of it, that smirk might be a good part of her undoing too. The smirk that makes him look both over-confidant and child-like all at once. Yes, he was truly a bit of everything, a bit of everything that she wanted to keep for herself and herself alone.

For now however, it cannot be. She must content herself with quick glances at those eyes and hoping that the moment will come when she can look at him, gaze deeply, and let her eyes betray her heart. But not yet. For now this small comfort is all she can have. It is enough, it must be enough.
